  • Art Not Ads!

    Posted on | May 19, 2009 | 4 Comments

Inspired by the guerilla DIY styles of the Tech Collective and SeanMorrisseyCarroll, I decided to remake my blog into a platform for art, not ads. Sure, it may pay even less than the pennies I make from click-thru’s; but the personal satisfaction and public value of sharing creative and innovative work is priceless. Plus, I’d rather stimulate minds than numb them.

So, per AdFreeBlog: “By using this icon on my website I am stating…

    1. That I am opposed to the use of corporate advertising on blogs.
    2. That I feel the use of corporate advertising on blogs devalues the medium.
    3. That I do not accept money in return for advertising space on my blog.

    Signed,
    The Author”

That felt good. Now, what I mean by turning this into a platform for art: I’m going to use this space to share everything I come across that’s artistic, creative, innovative, evocative, provocative, or shows that someone put passion, thought and craft into their work. There’s so much good stuff I get to see and experience that it would be a shame to keep it all to myself.

Artist and organization opportunities, exhibits, events, etc., will still be posted; but from now on I’m not posting any brainfarts unless I can express them creatively. I need to start holding myself to higher standards, too.

If you believe in the “Art Not Ads” cause and would like to support this social experiment, please help feed the kitty…

And if there’s anything you think I should check out and write about, please ping me on Twitter (@gracerodriguez) or drop me a note at grace[at]AYNbrand.com. Thanks!

You can make a great many more blogs display art instead of ads using the add-art extension for Firefox. http://add-art.org/

Do we still qualify to display this if we allow someone who donates, say, $25 or more to put up a link?

Shawn: I think you can still display it as long as the link/promotion is not from a corporate advertiser. For instance, if Spacetaker wanted me to post something, I would have no qualms with it since it’s a non-profit organization.

Obscura: Thanks for the link! I love the tool and shared it on Twitter.

I am impressed with you and your work. And would like to discuss a few projects i’m working on, which i thibk you could help develop.

Unfortunately, i’m a little handicapped from four mini-strokes, and now am slowed in my walking and slowed in my speaking, but my head is still hopping, and my imagination ie soaring.
If you have a chance when you’re next in Houston near the Medical Center, may we have a little meeting?

I can’t drive yet, so i will ask my wife to drive me to see you. or we can meet at my house at 3320 so. macgregor Way? My wife is from Tacloban, Leyte and I met her there when i was in the Phippines with the first U. S. Phil/ Peace Corpse a long time ago probably before you were born.
